Tcase issuses

Ihave a 1996 GC and put a 249 tcase into it in dispare and it only has 2 wheel and 4 low is it the case or the computor not accepting it and why are the 242s so hard to find

computers have nothing at all to do with the transfer cases so I'd say it must be the T-case or the linkage.

Thanks for the info now I just pulled a 242 from an 89 cherokee it has a speed cable rather than electric speedo is it possible to switch one for the other

I think they will interchange. I believe a 10mm wrench removes the bolt. Just be sure and get the electronic assembly in right. I'm thinking it will go in 4 different ways depending on which gear ratio you have. If you clean up the aluminum housing, you should be able to see a number for each of the 4 positions. Look directly through the hole and you will notice the smaller hole the gear shaft runs through is off-set (cam like). As you twist the housing around the 4 different positions, it moves the speedo gear closer to or further away from the output shaft gear to allow proper mesh.

Thanks again Ron, I am on my way out to clean up the 242 and pull the 249 out, I hope to keep in touch cause once this red one sells I will build the girlfriends UP! It is a 97 Grand Cherokee with lot less miles.

I have found some really good instruction on t-case assembly/disassembly on 4wheelsupply.com I am going out now to attempt this imput shaft switch and take photos along the way. I am not a mechanic but I wrench A-LOT maybe my experience will someday help someone else.
