Hey guys I am new to this Jeep Forum. I am a BIG jeep fan and I have just recently bought a 4.0L I-6 2004 jeep TJ sport that has 88,000 km for a used dealer. I have a few questions, 1) I hear a lot of rattling when I let go of my clutch in neutral and I also hear something like a big belt turning when the Jeep is moving is that normal 2) I want my jeep to last for a long time so what can I do in terms of maintenance to keep it in good condition and how do I know if I have dana 44 rear axle?

well go online ad find a picture of a dana 44 axle. All axles have a distinct differential cover. here's what dana 44s look like:

if it doesnt look like that, then it probably looks like this,
A dana 35 axle, standard in almost all the jeep wranglers ever built:

Note how the dana 44 is a bit more lumpy shaped, and the dana 35 is rounded like an egg

I hope this helps

Okay, first of all, that rattle that you hear when you take your foot off the clutch is actually normal. All jeeps do that. As for the belt sound, I'm not sure, but about the dana 44 diff. Their should be a metal tab welded on to it that will say dana 44 or dana 35.

My rattle was the exhaust as well!
One other thing to check and is real easy.
See what plug it has. The 44 has a metal one the 35 has a rubber plug.
A person once told me i was driving beyond the capabilities of my vehicle - obviously they never seen the capabilities of a jeep!
